Formación en seguridad para trabajadores durante olas de calor en Alcorcón
  • Alcorcón will provide training to employees of companies located in the city on first aid and prevention against the increasing temperatures associated with heatwaves in the summer, which are becoming more extreme due to climate change. This initiative was launched by the Department of Security and the Municipal Institute of Employment and Economic Training (IMEPE) and will be carried out by the Civil Protection service, whose training department members will be responsible for these workshops.
  • David López, Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Citizen Security, has emphasized that «with climate change, we are experiencing increasingly extreme temperatures in summer. It is the responsibility of companies to adapt the working conditions of their employees to ensure their safety, but with this plan, we want to further advance in the shared security of the municipality.»

«Training in first aid for workers is essential because their widespread presence throughout the city makes them the first line of assistance in potential cases of heatstroke or dehydration, until the public emergency services intervene,» added David López.

Carlos Carretero, President of IMEPE and Councilor for Employment and Training, added that «in Alcorcón, we continue to build a safer city in the face of increasingly extreme temperatures. Companies in the municipality play a very important role in advancing in this regard. From IMEPE, we encourage them to participate in these sessions.»

IMEPE is currently sending emails to companies in the city to schedule the date and location of these training sessions, which can take place either at the company itself or at the IMEPE Business Center, depending on the number of employees attending these workshops.

The main objective of these training sessions is to provide employees with the necessary knowledge to recognize and assist patients experiencing cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA), as emergencies due to heat can lead to this condition.

Regarding the theoretical part, participants will receive training on the 112 emergency number and its operation; the application of the P.A.S technique (Protect, Alert, Assist); how to identify an unconscious patient and the associated risks; recognizing CPA and applying an AED if possible; and identifying patients with heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

The practical phase will involve exercises in physical cooling measures; manual opening of the airway; implementing the L.P.S (lateral position of safety), a first aid technique used to position an unconscious breathing person to keep their airways clear and prevent choking from obstruction or fluid aspiration; and finally, the application of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

These sessions will last between 90 minutes and 2 hours, promoting quick and effective response from individuals who witness such emergencies in the municipality of Alcorcón.
