The tragedy that occurred in Alcorcón, with two firefighters killed in the fire at a parking garage, continues to cause 24 hours later much shock throughout Madrid.
All emergency services in the Community of Madrid have observed a minute of silence for the two firefighters who died. Especially moving were those at the fire stations, although the tribute from the Civil Protection teams, the SUMMA 112, and the forest rangers was not lacking.
The exact sequence of events in Alcorcón is still being investigated in detail. The forensic police are still waiting to be able to enter the garage.
Sergio returned to the burning garage to rescue Jesús and the two firefighters died
According to Telemadrid from sources familiar with the facts, everything happened after the driver of a car, a Porsche Cayenne E hybrid, lost control when entering the garage, accelerated, and on descent crashed into a combustion car. Thus, the theory of an electric car exploding, as was initially considered, disappears because the vehicle involved was a hybrid car.
After the crash, a large-scale fire broke out affecting other combustion cars. The fire reached such a temperature that it affected the battery cells of the hybrid car, and that’s when everything took a turn for the worse. The fire gained strength and generated an intense smoke.

The firefighters accessed the site ‘hose in line’, all holding onto a long hose because visibility was poor due to the smoke. This is a way to operate in these types of situations with reduced visibility to ensure no firefighter gets lost in the process and falls into danger.
The problem arose when the sliding door of the garage, hit by the hybrid car, collapsed, trapping several firefighters inside the garage.
Sergio and Jesús, the two young firefighters who died in the garage fire in Alcorcón
It was at this moment that Sergio, who had managed to escape, while being attended to by medical personnel, realized that his colleague Jesús was missing and went back in to look for him. That decision was fatal for Sergio, as he ultimately died in the attempt.
By then, the garage was like an oven, with very challenging conditions in terms of temperature and visibility.
The investigation is ongoing. Madrid continues to mourn what happened.
